“Take No Seconds”
GROWING IN CHRIST
“Take No Seconds”
Galatians 1:12 “I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ.” (NIV)
Our world is filled with new avenues to be spiritually fed. Social media inundates you with spiritual truths, teachings, Scriptures, wisdom, and impressions. You can receive any number of devotions every day, read a book on any topic, listen to sermons online from churches throughout the world, and basically satisfy every spiritual need or curiosity that you have.
Knowledge has become so numerous and plentiful that a follower of Christ can easily replace the living Christ with knowledge, others’ applications, and teachings without ever experiencing and applying what God is trying to do in his/her life. Your faith becomes not a first-hand experience with the living Christ, but a second hand interpretation of another’s experience with Christ.
God knew that the power of sin and the law made towing the line to righteousness impossible.
Two of the important purposes that God accomplished through Jesus were:
1) Breaking the bondage of slavery to the law.
2) Achieving righteousness through the intimacy of your relationship with Jesus.
Both these purposes are sabotaged when your faith becomes second-hand instead of a first-hand experience with Christ.
1 Corinthians 2:13 shows how God wants your spiritual walk to come out of your relationship with Christ in the Spirit, “This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.” (NIV) Allowing God to craft your life through the living God impassions you to Him while exposing the living Christ to others.
You can fall into a second-hand faith very easily in today’s world of endless knowledge. You must have a mind and heart like the Bereans in Acts 17:11, “Now the Bereans were of more noble character than the Thessalonians, for they received the message with great eagerness and examined the Scriptures every day to see if what Paul said was true.” (NIV)
Hearing the message is the first step to a first-hand faith. The next step is to filter it through the Word of God by the Holy Spirit. The Word of God inspired by the Holy Spirit is powerful and transforming. Hebrews 4:12-13 says, “For the word of God is living and active. Sharper than any double-edged sword, it penetrates even to dividing soul and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him to whom we must give account.” (NIV)
It does not say another man’s thoughts and inspiration are living and active; the Word of God is living and active! Approaching truth this way is not to take you to greater knowledge, but to take you to greater obedience (applying the Word in your life), experience, and transformation by God.
Hebrews 7:16 says, “One who has become a priest not on the basis of a regulation as to his ancestry but on the basis of the power of an indestructible life.” (NIV)
Your life becomes indestructible not because of your knowledge, but because of the transformative process of the Word of God being applied in your life. Pursue God not for knowledge, but for the intimacy of knowing and experiencing His love, grace, and mercy.
John 4:42 “They said to the woman, ‘We no longer believe just because of what you said; now we have heard for ourselves, and we know that this man really is the Savior of the world.’” (NIV)
